All our classes are small in number and never have more than eight children.
In the musicianship class the children learn many songs and rhymes initially unconsciously and through imitation. Thus they first learn by ear. They start by learning from the heart rather than using intellect. The sound comes before the symbol. As the children grow musical concepts for example, pitch names in solfa (do, re,mi) are introduced more consciously. The children are taken on a musical journey learning all the concepts of music most fundamentally developing a sense of pulse and relative pitch.
As well as singing the children express themselves through sound and movement, and thus
learn holistically engaging the body, mind and emotion as Dalcroze suggested. Thus the
classes enable children to develop their hearing, listening and self-expression. Introducing
children to music in this way means that their singing and later instrumental playing is
naturally musical and expressive
As Zoltan Kodály stated ‘Music should belong to everyone…music is a spiritual food for which thereis no substitute…there is no complete spiritual life without music…there are regions of the human soul which can be illuminated only through music.’
